The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, international non-profit organisation that manages the world’s leading certification and labelling programme for responsible aquaculture.

ASC Vision: A world where aquaculture plays a major role in supplying food and social benefits for mankind whilst minimising negative impacts on the environment.

ASC Mission: To transform aquaculture towards environmental sustainability and social responsibility using efficient market mechanisms that create value across the chain.

Consumers across the globe are increasingly demanding to know where their products come from, and that they have been sourced in a responsible manner. The ASC environmental and social standard is a global standard for the farmed seafood sector that is well recognised around the world, attracting environmentally and socially conscious buyers, retailers and consumers. By joining an internationally renowned certification scheme, aquaculture producers can demonstrate their commitment to responsible fish farming in both an environmental and social context. Thus, helping to create a world where sustainable aquaculture is the norm.

- ASC Salmon Standard
- ASC Shrimp Standard
- ASC Bivalve Standard
- ASC Abalone Standard
- ASC Freshwater Trout Standard
- ASC Pangasius Standard
- ASC Seriola and Cobia Standard
- ASC Tilapia Standard
- ASC Standard for Sea Bass, Sea Bream & Meagre
- ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard
Already published but not yet auditable:
• ASC Standard for Flatfish
• ASC Standard for Tropical Marine Finfish

These Standards consist of an array of performance indicators that help to move the aquaculture industry towards a greater level of environmental and social sustainability. These indicators include:
- The protection of surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity
- Limitations on the use of antibiotics and chemicals
- Prevention and combatting the spread of illness and parasites between farmed fish and wild fish
- Proactively preventing fish escapes
- Strict criteria for the use of resources and sustainable feed
- Preservation of water quality and protection of high value conservation areas
- Workers’ rights and occupational health and safety
- Community engagement
- Taking into consideration the needs of surrounding communities
